Tanner McQueen’s Statement of Faith

“And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. And all ate and were filled. What was left over was gathered up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.” Luke 9:16-17

My name is Tanner McQueen, I live in Beaverton, Oregon. I live with my mom, my dad, my brother, and my sister. I also have 4 pets, 3 cats and 1 dog. I attend Five Oaks Middle School as an eighth grader and next year I will be attending Westview High School. Some things I like to do are playing videogames with my friends and doing robotics during the school year. I also enjoy skiing in the winter, especially with friends. Some of my future plans are to continue doing competitive robotics and after high school getting into a good college.

I believe that God is the one true divine power and that he is the source of life for the world. I believe he created everything and is the person or entity to look up to the most. I believe that Jesus Christ is the human realization of good and came to spread the word and the purpose of good in a way that humans can more easily understand. I believe that Jesus was sent as a missionary of God to truly prove that God is real and that he is someone to be revered and worshiped. I believe that the Holy Spirit is a guide for humans that exists in every person and is what helps people in the worst times.

I believe that being baptized is like becoming part of God’s family. Similarly to how when you are born you become part of your family, being baptized is like being born into the family of God. I was baptized when I was 6 weeks old so for me I have always been baptized, but I know that for some people who are baptized when they are older it is a very big deal. However, I think affirming your baptism is like accepting to yourself that you are a member of God’s family. I think this because in the Bible it talks about how every person is a member of God’s family, but I feel like not every person may agree with that.

I think being a follower of Jesus and of God in today’s world means spreading the kindness and peace that God desires, I think it also means we should accept everyone no matter, race, religion or any other difference in beliefs or looks. I think we should also spread the word of God and do everything in our power to become an example of Jesus.

I think the mission of the church is to be a conduit of God’s vision and to treat others with respect and kindness, and to just treat everyone as your neighbor. I also think the mission of the church is to educate people, especially kids. Also to be an example of Jesus and to help the community as much as possible.

I think the faith question that I think about the most is related to the creation story. My question is that in the bible it states that God created the Universe and the Earth in seven days. However there is a lot of science that proves that it took billions of years for the Universe to form and even more millions of years for the Earth and life to form. So I wonder which of the stories is true, or is it some combination of both. I just wonder how or if both of the stories about creation can be true at the same time.

Currently I am involved in the church regularly. However I plan to continue to nurture my faith by participating during church and confirmation classes, and by asking questions about God and Jesus Christ.
