Join a Discussion on Cooperative Housing!
With affordable housing hard to come by, more people are exploring cooperative housing as a creative way to share resources and nurture community.
On Thursday, May 21, at 1:00 pm, Fumi Tosu from Dandelion House, a Catholic Worker community in Portland, will facilitate a discussion on housing in Fellowship Hall. A panel of St. Andrew members engaged in different cooperative housing models will share dreams, goals, and experiences.
- Pr. Colleen Nelson is a resident of Trillium Hollow, a multi-generational cohousing community covering four acres in the Cedar Mill neighborhood. According to its website, it “combines private homes with shared indoor and outdoor spaces designed to support an active and interdependent community life.”
- Pr. Allison Bengfort, formerly part of the Metanoia Community Peace House, recently purchased a home in NE Portland. She is now part of the Second Home Program sponsored by Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, and hers is a Host Home to an unaccompanied high school student experiencing homelessness.
- For Bob & Cindy Stadel, cohousing is an outgrowth of their involvement with the Sanctuary Team. A Malik Zada–Stadel housing co-op scheduled to begin in early 2027 will address mutual housing needs: The Malik Zadas will gain the additional rooms and yard that their family of six needs, while converting the garage to an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) will allow the Stadels to age in a familiar place with a supportive family.
Join the conversation on May 21 for more information and resources on cooperative housing.

2026 COLLINS LECTURE WITH JOHN FUGELSANG
Saturday, June 6, 7 pm
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral
Fugelsang is author of The New York Times bestseller, “Separation of Church and Hate: A Sane Person’s Guide to Taking Back the Bible from Fundamentalists, Fascists and Flock-Fleecing Frauds.” Using humor and scripture to challenge far-right Christian ideologies, he argues for a return to the core teachings of Jesus—love, mercy and service.
If you want to learn directly from John Fugelsang about his approach to using the scripture and Jesus’ teachings to challenge Christian nationalism, join us on June 6 for the Collins Lecture! Tickets are $30 (virtual option available) at emoregon.org/events.

“Would Jesus Be a Capitalist?”
Ecumenical Event for Young Adults
Sunday, May 31, 5:30 pm
Christ UMC Cedar Mill
Last month was our first attempt at an ecumenical event for young adults, combining forces with Cedar Hills United Church of Christ, Spirit of Grace, and Christ United Methodist Church Cedar Mill. The next installment in this series of experimental events will be at 5:30 pm on Sunday, May 31, at Christ UMC Cedar Mill (12755 NW Dogwood St, Portland). This month’s host is Pr. Paul Richards-Kuan, who will be leading a discussion entitled “Would Jesus Be a Capitalist?” Join us for food and fascinating conversation together as we build relationships with young adults from these other similar faith communities. We can arrange for child care, hosted at St. Andrew, if that would be helpful for you to be able to attend. Contact Kyler Vogt to let him know if you are interested!

Adult Education
“If adult education does not become a priority for a congregation, at some point that congregation will cease to exist because its members will simply not know or understand the purpose of the congregation and their role in fulfilling that purpose.” —Neal Boese, Blueprint for Change, page 83.

Children & Youth
Children are not the “future” of the church; they ARE the church. Our Director of Next Generational Ministry, Kyler Vogt, is continuing to connect children, youth, and adult mentors during this time when connection is more important than ever.

Doubt and Darkness
Fear is rampant today. It drives our society into a frenzy of traps we hope will bring us longed-for security and iron-clad safety. For many, our facile attempts to find answers or solutions in religion no longer work. There seems to be no permanently safe place to settle. But might it be that in the midst of our angst, in the places where we all hang on for dear life, new birth can take place?
