  • Providing a place for our members to work the soil, growing and harvesting organic produce and flowers
  • Educating people of all ages about the benefits of sustainable and eco-friendly gardening
  • Hosting events for the community and garden members
  • Cultivating a community of individuals committed to sustainable land use in an urban setting

Garden Policies

St. Andrew Lutheran Church has made part of its property available to church participants and
neighborhood community members for the benefit of gardeners. In the spirit of making and
maintaining the garden as a true community endeavor, we ask that participants contribute to its
upkeep. Gardeners are responsible for following the garden policies in this document:

Community Garden Policy

Using Your Plot

You are welcome to garden all year round. During the main growing season (April–October),
show you are using your plot by:

  • Preparing the soil for planting
  • Planting and growing crops
  • Harvesting ripe produce
  • Removing weeds, especially those in flower or setting seed
  • Collecting seed you want to save before it drops on the soil
  • Reframing from planting trees or other plants that shade adjacent plots

When you are not actively gardening, continue to care for your garden plot by:

  • Removing weeds, especially those in flower or setting seed
  • Removing dead and dying plants, especially if they are diseased or covered with pests
  • Neatly storing seasonal structures (e.g., tomato cages, stakes, trellis materials, and wood) when not in use

Maintaining Your Plot

You are responsible for:

  • Providing soil, fertilizer, pest control, and soil testing as needed
  • Keeping paths bordering your plot free of obstructions so others can safely pass
  • Removing weeds from the paths and your plot
  • Maintaining paths that touch your plot
  • Storing supplies and tools inside your plot
  • Keeping plants within the boundaries of your plot

St Andrew Church is responsible for:

  • Providing water
  • Repairing or replacing plot frames as needed. Work will be scheduled whenever
possible in the “off season” when garden plots are not growing crops.

This description does not present all of the responsibilities of gardeners. You should read and understand the document Community Garden Policy before reserving a plot.
